COLLECTION
Meteorite Name: Peekskill
Location: New York
Classification: H6 Chondrite
Witnessed Fall: Yes
Date and Time: October 9, 1992
TKW: 12.57 kilograms
Remarks:
Peekskill is the most widely video taped bolide in history, as it fell just after 7:45 pm on a Friday night in the middle of high school football season. Most experts agree that approximately 50 - 70 individuals survived passage through our atmosphere, though only one was recovered. This stone was easy to find, as it crashed completely through the trunk of Michelle Knapp's car in her mother's driveway while she and her boyfriend were watching Star Trek, of all things! The slice from my collection was taken directly from the leading edge at impact and the crust still has red paint all over it from the Chevy Malibu's trunk. Besides all of the fanfare around crashing through a car, this is a beautifully brecciated meteorite specimen. The Peekskill fireball was captured on video in no less than 15 different locations. It was witnessed not only in New York, but also at least in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

Photo of Michelle Knapp in the driveway with her Malibu taken by John Bortle only days after the historic impact. Jerry Armstrong was kind enough to give me the original slide for this photo, which he had originally received from his friend, Mr. Bortle. Mr. Bortle photographed this image and at least one more at the time, and he donated another slide to the Smithsonian Institution. The rights to this image are owned by Mr. Bortle; if you are interested in a copy I will contact him to request permission.
